Iīm on shared hosting.
I would like to use a chat - havenīt decided on which one yet, but are there any recommendations on a chat that I would be allowed to use. We are talking about max 50 concurrent users. Thanks |

I use flashchat, it's only $5 and it's ok to use on shared hosting here according to some admins. It's a really nice chat and works real good too. You can't use a chat with IRC though.

I second what Eric recommended ... Have had flashchat integrated into my phpBB forum for several/many months with no major problems or cpu/bandwidth "hogging" ...

How many users have you had online using flashchat?

The most I ever had (as far as I know) was somewhere around 15.

See, thatīs my problem - flashchat uses mysql, and hostgator has a limit of 30 concurrent users on mysql, so if I have 50, I will have problems.

The concurrent users at 30 doesn't mean that only 30 users can be using the chat at the same time.

It would at least be worth a try.

When you are talking about chat, only 30 users could hit enter in the same millisecond. On average, 1200 users could be chatting at the same time without ever running into the 30 connection limit. (BTW: HG uses 25 connection limit) Quote:

After looking at the logs of my client he had a phpBB forum with 150 people online (which about 50 were registed) plus 30 persons at the flashchat. This led to a server load of about 25 for 1h and he was suspended by HG, this can be read here:
http://forums.hostgator.com/showthread.php?t=10546 I do not think it was the flashchat that increased the load up to this values but the combination of the two (or more if other users on the same server were using resources). So be carefull so that it does not happen you. Also HG , after beeing informed by me about the flashchat, said it was in violation of the TOS (and I deleted as soon as - many hours after - I had ftp access). It's the close eyes until it gives problems. Then red card and TOS as argument.Vtrain

Well, my account was suspended because of a chat that rarely is being used, I don´t get it ! I will write to support right now.

It's still against the TOS.

I can't tell if this is a question or a statement. If a statement, I'd say--assume you will caught doing anything that's against the TOS, and further assume the suspension for such actions will happen during your site's busiest time.
