Is this chat script OK with Hostgator?

Hi,

I see that Hostgator notes in TOS that some chat scripts are prohibited, so I was wondering if Flash Chat was ok?

Just to add to esl,

The main thing to remember is the ressources usage it would take on your account. If you have a lot of traffic per day, make sure they are ok with your script or you could get suspended for taking too much ressources(cpu memory and sql connections).

I've never seen this one before and will take a look. Thanks for sharing.

it isn`t resource intensive but as dwight says it did suck, big security flaw in it also.... we got caught out with it....
use something like www.pjirc.com its free and doesn`t use alot of resource to run, you will need an IRC server to link into.... we have a private IRC server that your welcome to use, setup rooms etc on.. feel free to pm me if its of use to you... can supply also a setup guide to get you up and ruinning in minutes.

I'm interested in alternative CHAT scripts that we can integrate with SMF forums... we're currently using FlashChat on 3 forums, but if there's a better alternative that runs lower server resources, I'm open to suggestions!

FlashChat does seem to use a fair amount of resources since it's hammering a bunch of scripts every 3 seconds per user and updating the SQL database constantly.

I've been looking around and found phpFreeChat which looks interesting and is open-source. It seems to work at least as well as FlashChat does, and it's easier to change things since it's not Flash based.

there is an mirc based chat script available from the SMF mod store, its free too... very easy to setup aswell.

I'm.... queasy at the thought of using someone else's IRC server for the interface. Some of our members trade real names, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and such in chat, and I don't have any control over the security or privacy of those chat sessions when they're stored on another server. If it's all on MY server than I can guarantee that the information will never be misused in any way whatsoever.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anyone WOULD abuse private chat session information, but the possibility of abuse is enough to unnerve me.

our server doesn`t log... plus not many use it..

its there if you want to use it, upto you... doesn`t make any difference to me if you use it or not to be honest.. simply thought it may have helped you out

Remember that unless you're on a dedicated, you can't run anything that interfaces with IRC. In the prohibited area of the TOS:
