$2 per dedicated IP is too much on the Shared Reseller accounts.
I was inches from canceling my host account with another company today, and upgrading my hostgator account and moving everything here, but I could not bring myself to do it, as they throw in a bunch of dedicated IPs and charge LESS than hostgator does for shared. Of course everything is a tradeoff, you get many good things with hostgator, but if you have ecommerce clients, have to deal with SSL certs and everything, it's just very nice having some dedicated IPs you can just put to use at any time without signing up for additional charges. If it were just $0.50 or something like that it would shrink out of sight, and justifying them would be acceptable. But when your margins are close, $2 feels like too much. I suspect this suggestion will do no good, it will be recommended that I get a dedicated server with free IPs included, but the charge there for one month is more than the charge for one year at this other place, major price factor there. So there you go. |

You can FEEL however you want about it. The problem is that IPs cost ME $2.00 a month and there isn't such thing as a FREE IP in the shared environment. I have over 100 users on my server, I get 7 "Free" IP addresses and for the rest I pay $2.00 each, the same price HG pays for theirs. So, basically, IPs cost me about $1.25 each, but if I had to provide 1 for every customer they would cost me $1.86 each. I sell them for $2.00 a month. My profit potential is between $.12 and $.75 a month for those IP addresses. So you bet, I'm selling them for $2.00 a month, the same as everyone else. Not only that, I can only get 32 of them for any one machine. That means, that if every customer purchased an IP address, I could only fit 30 of them on each machine. I'd be paying $8.33 per customer for something I sell for $7.00 a month.... Feel however you want, but you can't get a free ride here or on my server. |

There is no need to be smart about it. This forum is called "Suggestions" and I was making a suggestion. I didn't suggest that to throw rocks at HG or someone like you.
This other hosting company I have an account with charges $9 month on a one year term and you get 8 (yes, eight) dedicated IPs thrown in with it. That scales right up, I could get 30 dedicated for $30 if I wanted it. You also get outsourced support that answers tickets the next day if you're lucky, no forum like this, and spam scripts that occasionally zero your mailbox quotas for no reason. Tradeoffs, support and atttentiveness costs money. But clearly, they are somehow working on a very different cost regimen for dedicated IPs than you are, and this cost regimen of theirs must be available to other companies, so that is why I make the suggestion, it isn't just feelings without facts. |

I'm not throwing stones, just pointing out the facts. No matter where somone goes, IPs are limited and expensive. If a company is giving away free IP addresses, 8 per client, then they are paying for those some how, because no one gets them for free.

Just to add, you say right in your post how they're paying for them-- by using the money that hostgator spends on real support and security.

Thanks, I did say that and of course I know that. The point of that suggestion was just the first sentence: I came within an inch of canceling that account the other night, moving all my sites to WG and upgrading. But the low cost supporting the ecommerce sites I have over there with their certs and static ips made me stop and keep it. So, that's the reason for the suggestion, possiblilty of more revenue for you, more-better hosting at HG for people like me. Anyway, no big deal.

Not sure if this was a mistype, but just so you know, Serra and I don't work for HostGator, though Serra was talking about his pricing on the dedi he has through them.

I would suggest to you to see this issue from a seller view and not a dedicated IP buyer.
Here's why:If you need it for an e-commerce site, you should then have some revenu from this site? If it is not possible to get that 2$ back per month on sales, I would say, houston, we got a problem and then what about the SSL cert? And what about the hostings fees? What about support, phone bills and every thing that is far more pricy then a dedicated IP. This is just my opinion about dedicated IP the way I see it and not the way I would like you too see it. It is just my input, don't be mad! I do respect your suggestion. Best regards,
