Exclamation Changing my main domain...

I do not know exactly how to change a domain name so I went to change it for 5$ and then it said to wait for a while. I have waited and nothing yet, and so then i searched the site and the least i could find was to make a parked domain so i made one the same name as the new domain i bought.

Any help would be nice thanks,

OH, And i got an email telling me about some ticket or something but i do not know what to do now.

Hello, what is your ticket number? Domain changes would be done under Root WHM, which access is only given to Dedicated servers. You would have to fill out the change domain form to get the domain changed.

http://hostgator.com/changedomain.php

Also parked domains are new domain names that will use the same website as your primary domain name. This is much like a masked forward.

You should either post the ticket number or send a Private Message to GatorErick so they can look up the status. I will likely take some time to change it since it would be done through the tech support dept. You can also park it and use it that way. They will need to unpark it to change the account domain name.

Hey i did this and now i have a new domain. But i am affraid that i may have mistakenly done something wrong because i have gone to ticketing place and replied to the E-Mail and everything. Then it said its ready but now neither does my new domain work but my old one is lost now too. I can get ftp access and i am using the old domain to do it but thats not really what i need. So if anyone could help that would be great.

When i go to the url it says error page. Not the hostgator one either just the universal no website page. Thanks and here is the link...

New domain name --->: http://decayinggames.com

Old domain name --->: http://gamerzxxxonline.net

Thanks again,
-Brian

you also have to register your domain name(s). the fee you paid hg was simply to change your primary domain name for your account, and did not cover the registration fee.

Ok so everything is set now (so i am told and everything seems to be in order.) But, i was just wondering how long i need to wait for my site to be ready again? I got everything worked out with a support person about 56 hours ago. I was wondering if there is anything going on or what.

Thanks,
-Brian

The domain decayinggames.com is not showing as registered for me. I checked at a couple of whois sites and it shows as still being available. As Dix said, you have to register the domain you cannot just ask HG to change it.

actually, neither domain was registered when i checked at the time of my orginal response.

so brian, unless you actually register your domain somewhere (a domain registrar allows you to purchase a domain by the year) and upload a website to the webserver, you will not have a site no matter how long you wait or how many support tickets you open.

a website is nothing more than a collection of files on a computer. so without knowing anything about your previous site, i couldn't hazard a guess as to where you might find it. if you had it at another domain or host, that might be a place to look. if someone made the site for you, they may have a copy.

a "web host" provides a computer for your site to sit on that's accessible on the internet. that's what you bought from hostgator - webhosting.

the domain is a web address, and you buy them from domain name registrars. a domain is NOT the same thing as a website. there are many places to buy domain names.

but even if you buy the domain you're interested in, the website you want and/or some previous site you've had will not automatically appear there. the files have to be put on the new server. the domain name has to be set up with the right information to "tell" the rest of the internet your site sits on certain computers.

you may want to consider hiring someone who understands the concepts a bit more to help you get set up.

good luck.

Is it possible to get my domain restored? If so i think i will just do that and then i will go ahead and just stick with it. I guess i will go from there then.

without knowing what your site was, what your former domain was, who hosted it, or what there is to be "restored," no one can possibly answer that question.

i didn't think you were implying that. it's clear you have some confusion about what's what here, which is why i tried to explain the difference between a website, a domain, and webhosting.

i really think your best bet is to get some help. i would say it's a safe bet to say you didn't set up your original site that you're trying to get back, so i'd contact the person that helped you with that if possible.

I did set up the site i am just really misunderstanding the steps i had to take. I first thought all i had to do was the 5$ thing from the addons. I was wrong and i see why. I then responded to the ticket and it said that i had to backup all my stuff. I did that, now they sent me a email saying that it has been completed and said that everything was sorted out. Now i am still confused and so on and so on.....

What domain did you register and with whom? As Dix has said, the hosting account and the domain registration are separate things. You must register a domain for use with a hosting account. You can do this with hostgator at http://hostgator.com/domains or with any registrar such as godaddy.com or namecheap.com. You should register the domain you used on your hosting account.

there are several parts to having a website. making the site, as you know. having a domain-this is the web address, and having a host. the domain has to have "nameserver" info, provided by the host, that tells the internet which computer you're on. when you did the $5 thing, you thought that was getting your domain, which i understand the confusion. but all that was really changing was your hostgator account.

if you have your site moved already and it's supposed to be all sorted out, then possibly the only piece you have missing is the domain. if you follow the link rick just gave you to register the domain you want, (and enter the nameservers that you should have from hostgator), then you might have everything in place.

or maybe not, because it's not entirely clear to me what steps you might have completed or not. but it sounds like you're actually pretty darned close...
