Last June i signed up for the HostGator 'Swamp' package, since then the available resources for this package have increased is their anyway of altering my HostGator account to use the new resource allowance or would i have to cancel my current 'Swamp' account then re-register on the new 'Swamp' package to recieve the changes to this package?

Thanks,

You would have to cancel and re-register.

could I ask why we need to cancel and then re-apply to the same plan just so as to get the extra space and facilities new customers get?

It just seems to be making extra hassle with billing etc...

Sorry for the short reply, but this topic has been discussed at length in this thread. I couldn't possibly do it justice here.

So, grab a cup of Joe and get ready for some good readin'

In short, the main reason we cannot simply upgrade all existing customers is that the boxes would not be able to support the extra bandwidth/disk space being offered.

Let's just say, as an example, that we have a server with a single, 100MB hard disk. On this box we host 5 resellers, each allowed 20BM of disk space. If we doubled our reseller allowance to 40MB, you can see that now these 5 resellers would not "fit" on the current server.

We would have to move many accounts to new servers, and this is not only time consuming, but can result in unwanted downtime for the customers.

This post brought forward a concern I now have. I am a new reseller on the aluminum plan and was confident that should my needs change, as I am hopeful they will, that I could just upgrade to the next plan etc and remain on the same server. Will the resources be there without a move?

You will be fine. We leave enough "room to grow" for reasons just as this, and we never oversell. However, we do not leave enough room for every domain on the box to receive double the space, etc. when we upgrade our plans.

There are times when we are required to move domains from one server to another, such as a shared customer wanting to upgrade to reseller or dedicated, but this is not an everyday request.

Good, I was a little worried as it would be a lot of work to change servers especially with paying customers

So how much time would it take to cancel my Swamp Gator account and then re-sign up? I'd love to have all the space that new customers get, but it's nice to see that old customers are getting the shaft, no matter your explanations. Bumping up old accounts to new standards, would proooooobably, you know, keep us here.

Hi

I know I'm butting in somewhat, but see no reason to start a new thread on the same subject. I changed to a semi dedi a couple of months ago and was told I get 200 gig BW. I see this has now more than doubled on new accounts to 500gig.

At the moment I don't need that kind of BW, but my site is growing all the time. if I want the new limits I assume I too would need to cancel and rejoin. During this time would I have site down time?

The reason I ask is because I was somewhat worried if my site went over the 200 gig that I wouldn't be able to afford the full dedicated server, but with your new limits I should cope easily should the need arise.

In fact, thinking about it, didn't I once read that hostgator offered existing customers some sort of one off transfer fee onto the new allowances? Or am I thnking of something else? I'd rather pay a one of fee than have to cancel and resign up...

It wouldnt take long at all. You would just need to backup your data and re-upload it to the new account.

As for giving current customers "the shaft", I don't see how you can even suggest this. Every business occasionally offers new and exciting things in order to attract new customers. Here's an example....

I'm currently paying $80 a month for X number of digital cable television channels and have ben paying this amount for quite awhile, but right now they are running a promotion that offers a lot more channels and some premium offerings for "new subscribers only". Should I feel slighted? Well, no. I've been an account holder for a long time, and when I signed up I received the best deal that was available at that time. I couldn't even cancel my account and sign up again to take advantage of the new deal, because they wont allow that.

The bottomline is that we will always be seeking to attract new business with special offers. This means that you likely have a larger allowance than many people who signed up prior to you, and people who sign up next year will likely have more than people who sign up today. It's a natural progression, and for those who wish to take advantage of the new offers, it's not as if we disallow it. You are free to re-join, and this is something not ever host allows.
