I asked this question to a sales rep before signing up.
They told me that neither the download nor upload speed has been capped. I asked this, because I am currently at bluehost, and they cap their upload to 56kbyte/s. Verry annoying if you have a fast connection but you cant use it for uploading files to your own site. Once I signed up and got the account information I tested this right away. And what do you think? My upload bounces against the 58kbyte/s mark. I tested with speedtest to see what my upload at least should be to Dallas tx. http://www.speedtest.net/result/212869029.png 799kbit/s = 97.534kbyte/s My full speed is http://www.speedtest.net/result/212868311.png Could anyone tell me if there is or isnt a limit? Thanks |

I don;t think HG puts any limits to upload or download speed. The tests you are referencing shows quite a distance to the server which "would" affect your speeds.
You might want to upload the "mini" speedtest available from speedtest.net and run a test from your server. I have found that ftp uploads and downloads are affected more so by distance/line quality. Also, does the upload speed start off fast and progressivly slow down.

I had put the mini already online and it gets me even lower speeds. 332kbits/s. http://www.beuh-racing.com/mini/
However I am at home now. Previous tests were done at work. With the mini I get the slow speed, but now on ftp I upload with 70kbyte/s Thats not bad if you think my max is 80kbyte/s. So 10kbyte/s loss is more than acceptable. I dont know why my upload at work (wich is double the speed is what I have home) is so low. At least I am confident now that its not the HostGator but something else. On the plus side, I maxed out the download speed of my isp on the Mini speedtest. Thats something I wouldnt even dared to dream. HostGator is really fast! Thanks for your help! |

certain ISP's may have upload speed cap too, so do a couple of speed tests or ask your ISP, in my 6+yrs expeirence on webhosting and been Hostgator customer for 3yrs now, i see mostly the speed issues results to problems with individual ISP's.

Someone kinda missed the difference between kbit/s and kbyte/s.
Your connection looks like a casual ITU G.992.1/2 ADSL connection with uncapped download (theoretical max 8mbit/s or 1mbyte/sec) and capped upload (theoretical max 350kbit/s = 43.75kbyte/sec). Your upload speed seems fine for your connection, considering that ADSL connection quality is heavily influenced by your distance of the exchange, and there is also some protocol overhead associated with PPPoE/PPPoA/ATM encapsulation. So I kinda don't see what you are complaining about
