I will be ordering a reseller account but need to know more about transferring the sites from my current provider to Hostgator. My current reseller account does use Cpanel.
I spoke to someone on the phone but they could not give me the answers I needed. I need to do this quickly and I'm not sure if Hostgator can do the transfers quickly enough so my sites and customers don't have any downtime. I need to move about 12 sites within the next day or so because I need to cancel my account with the other provider by Monday Feb 28th so I don't get billed again. If I can do today it will leave time to propogate before the other account shuts down. So the question is whether I can do the transfers myself and if I do can I do it where the email accounts are setup on the new Hostgator server. I know Hostgator says that they can do this with them transferring but need up to 72 hrs to do so which I don't have. The person I spoke on the phone with said I can do the transfers with a backup and restore individually for each site but couldn't say whether the emails on each account would be setup again on the new server. He said I would have to add each email account manually and then contact customers to change each email again to their current passwords. Is this true? How can I do these transfers myself? If I do it I can get it done quicker. Or is it possible that Hostgator may be able to get the transfers done today (or tomorrow the latest) if I submit for that? What is my best option here? What have others experience been with this situation? I've looked and can't find an answer. Thanks much for any help before I move forward. |

According to this sticky post it says I can do full backups and copy them to the new account myself and will have no data loss.
http://forums.hostgator.com/helpful-...st-t37612.html Is it possible to do full backup restores from Hostgators Cpanels, because I can only do partial restores from the Cpanels I have now. I am supposing that full backup and restores will transfer everything including files, databases and the email accounts intact and this should be all that is needed to migrate everything from the old server to the new Hostgator one. I figure this may be how Hostgator does the transfers for us, but I don't know. Does anyone have a clue on any of this? Thanks. |

If you are getting a vps or dedicated server, you can restore on your own.

The full backups should contain everything but, I believe, that support would have to perform the restore. You would only be able to do the restores yourself with a dedicated or VPS.

So then No matter how I transfer myself I won't be able to get the email accounts to transfer also the way they are without having to manually add all emails back to each account myself (with new passwords) and go through trying to get everyone to reset their passwords or have me reset for them again if needed?
Looking like there will be no way to avoid customer downtime changing over if this is so. This is gonna be a mess. Unless Hostgator does manage to transfer quickly for me if I go that route. Not sure what to do here. But need to decide quickly. |
