Unhappy How can I test the access speed of a host

Hello,
I am a new customer of this company (not a reseller). I bought a semi dedicated plan because my company is foreseeing a rise in the demand of our site due to an advertising campaign we will start soon.
Looking at big sites, like Microsoft or Borland, one realize that their speed is really blazing. I have a 768 Kbps connection and use DU meter for measuring downloading speed and I can clearly see in these first class websites that the meter always stays near the top; also downloading files is very fast.

I downloaded a test file from Hostgator and had a sluggish 70 - 80 kbps with peaks of 120 - 150

I suppose Microsoft has all the bandwith their well filled pocket allows them to buy, but would like to know if someone knows what kind of Internet connection does our hosting company have.

Thanks
AB

i usually get 500 KB/sec+ from my dedicated server. Not sure why your speeds are so slow but my guess would be it's more ISP related than HostGator related.

I only average about 150kbs from HG. Not slow, but not super fast. Is suspect it is not HG's fault.

Have you tried www.alertra.com?

It measures your site from 7 different points of the globe, China, HK, USA, etc.

Also, you can try your speed at www.webhostingspeed.com, a nice web.

Regards,
Sergio

Yea, when I test at test sites I get about 7 Mbs down and about 760 Kbs up. I'm capped at 8 Mbs, but it is hard to find a site that can fill that.

I believe he's talking about testing your hosting server, not your connection at home/office.
