Can hostgator handle heavy php+mysql cms'?

I've had this problem before with godaddy, my typo3 site crawls. But static html pages were fast enough though.

I've just opened up a demo of this host and it feels kinda slow, 3-4 seconds response to load module... I'm from the Philippines, would that matter?

Anyone here has a site heavily using php and mysql I could test?
