I thought cPanel was a standalone web server manager. How does Hostgator manage all their shared servers with cPanel? Do you have an inhouse app that allows you to manage all the cpanel instances?

I believe cpanel is only for clients to administer their own accounts on the shared Linux accounts. I myself have several Linux servers (not any dedicated servers on a host) that I manage strictly via ssh, I rarely have to log on to physically log onto a server)
My guess is that hostgator uses some sort of in house developed script(s) to manage the servers with. Steve |

cPanel is software installed on the server that they get licenses for (like you get a license for say MS offic). It is managed by another licensed piece of software WHM. cPanel isn't a webhosting company they merely provide a software solution for hosts like me or HG
WHM allows you to set up users in cPanel, with limited privilages. HG sets up your cPanel account with the features you payed for and access to the settings for your site. WHM and cPanel are by the same company, and work hand in hand. Last edited by Skyjumper; 07-02-2009 at 10:49 PM. |
