Default Bumping Old Threads

Wesley...

Can you please explain why you locked that old thread?

I simply cannot fathom the overall ridiculousness of this forum's aversion to old threads.

The text is still there in the database - i.e: THE MESSAGE STILL EXISTS. And especially that it's about a website - the internet hasn't gone out of style or discussion. So why the restriction?

What's the point of having a DISCUSSION forum if people don't discuss things freely?

I just cannot understand how a forum benefits from restricting activity on old messages.

Up till now I thought the general consensus of opinion on discussion forums is any activity is good activity - at least that's the way it's worked for me with discussion forums

There were broken links on there and designgator.com isn't really associated with us anymore. All it was going to due is cause confusion with the current forum members.

When information is out dated, it does not do anyone any good to bump up a 3-4 year old thread.

FWIW, on my vbulletin, I close (& lock) all my old threads 60 days after the last response. Nothing stinks quite as bad as someone dredging up an old argument. Nothing stopping them from starting a new thread.

So instead of saving space and using an existing thread, you figure it's alright to waste space and make two threads about the same stuff?

At most only a few bytes might be saved - just the pointers.

But actually you have a good point, but in reverse. People opening old wounds might be more apt to generate lots more text, thus wasting more space than if they started a new thread. But I dunno; if it's been a year or more all the same people and all the new ones will just as likely say it all over again regardless.

Not withstanding the post Othellobloke bumped (which was basically non software/server specific), there is a valid reason for not wanting people to bump support posts. cPanel and HG server policies are constantly changing. Often a thread has information that just doesn't apply anymore and may serve to confuse people.

As was the post that got locked creating all this discussion. All the links in the post were old, and the company that actually was doing work for HG is no longer doing it for whatever reason. So I think it was a smart and logical thing to do to lock the thread so more people didnt get confused.
