Hi all.
A quick run down, as well as my own site, I also host a friends as an add-on domain, which I manage etc whilst she''s out travelling the world. I also maintain a website for my Dive Club. I queried the Club Organiser last year when he renewed the domain for a single year (you can tell where this is going) So, no renew notices this year = site not renewed = place holder there. After a week of waiting for the sites host to explain/sort it out, I'm thinking it might be time to be seeking a new domain/host. I'm currently on the Baby croc plan. Have to say the level of support is great, and for my own needs and my friends it does the job (might not be as fast as my old host, but hey, it's cheaper and everything else is better!) Anyway, I'm aware of there being quite low limits on some things like php users. I'm not really that tech savvy when it comes to internet stuff and networking/connections etc. My question is, if I wanted to host my own site, my friends, and the dive clubs site, what package would you recommend. Money is an issue so I can't spend that much monthly! Usage wise: My Site - Has a few GB of stuff on there, but not many visitors. Currently only used 5.7 gb of bandwidth within the month. My Friends - Pretty small, less than maybe 100mb of stuff, bandwidth is included in my site being an addon domain. Dive club - Club has maybe 75 members, had 100mb of photos, but these were accessed quite a lot on the photogallery. Also made use of a message board and diary/calendar feature for events to be put on and members to book on/view details. And contained a dozen pages of info on the club. Likely to be the biggest drain on resources, even though my own site has far more content. I'm guessing the reseller hosting has the same restrictions as the shared hosting? It's a bit gutting as about $30 is the max I could afford a month, with the club paying half for their site ![]() Any suggestions appreciated! |

for shared hosting...check TOS, this is a grey area... this doesn't look like there is a profit motive but technically commercial use... im not expert, but thats the first thing that caught my eye.
consider the lower end or next up reseller plan. its nice to have the seperate cpanels... no potential problems under TOS. and it gives you the ability to expand to maybe hosting a few more "clubs" or something to help offset your own costs. i know a lot of people just want to do some casual "for profit" hosting just to cover the expense of their own hosting needs.

Thanks for that. It sure is a grey area I guess, as it could be changed so that the club doesn't pay me for the hosting of the site, but diving related costs to me might be reduced.I suppose that would be profit in a way, though I'd still be making a loss on the hosting side of things.
Not sure there is anyone else that would want a site hosting and would pay me for it, to make the reseller package worthwhile. It's food for thought I guess, maybe I'm another one of those people who would like to see a semi-semi-dedicated server option! Last edited by zpyder; 01-28-2007 at 08:27 AM. |

Just host them all under one shared account. If HG wants to be an ass about this, then they are truly asses. Your not trying to run a busniess, just splitting the hosting costs between some friends to put up a site. Its common practices for culbs (I know my SCUBA clube dose it). Honestly, there sites falls well within the "Unlimited Sites" you are allowed to host.
Just take whatever sized plan you need to host your site. |

They have more important things to worry about than the $50 a year (or whatever) you're getting from your dive club. |
