Before I buy a website how much on a credit card would I need at least?

Also I have not purchased a website from hostgator.com would I need to get a website from hostgator first before having full access? Thank you.

You don't buy websites from HostGator, you pay them to host your website.

At minimum, you need to pay for a month's worth of hosting. So once you pick a plan, you'll need enough money to cover your first month.
