I see that the TOS says that "Banner-Ad services (commercial banner ad rotation)" are forbidden on Reseller/Shared accounts. I am in the process of developing a few local community sites, seriously doubt they will achieve anything near the levels of activity that will nessecitate a dedicated server, but I do want to sell advertising on the sites to local businesses. Would it be permissible to run a server to feed my own sites, or is that in the realm of what's forbidden? I have no desire to provide banner ads to other sites, only my own sites that I'd be hosting.

You should write sales (at) hostgator.com, explaining what you want to do and whether the ads will be served within your account or to another, and see what they think.
(This is a peer forum, and it's not continually monitored by HG staff.)

I'll send an e-mail after I get my system back up and running, thanks.
And Sandro, no, what it means is you can't run your own service that you allow others to make use of. It means you can't create your own CommssionJunction. |

What?? Banner ads / Affiliate Ads/ links are forbidden on shared hosting?
I have a vBulletin site and I use banner ads (some hosted locally, most hosted external)... What is the policy on this and where can I read about it? |

i believe the "banner ad services" are referring to those who provide banner ads for a large number of other sites and thereby are hitting the server with the traffic for multiple other sites, not people who run somethign to serve banner ads to their own few hosted sites.
however, as have been pointed out, that is not an official answer.

The HG ToS has a link at the bottom of every page here.

It's like the difference between your site having an image on Flickr or Photobucket, and hosting such a service.* Using somebody else's bandwidth is fine, giving yours to someone else is not. *Or, to use a restaurant analogy: you can buy all the burgers you want and eat them in your apartment. The problem would be cooking hundreds of them there and serving them up to customers.

As has been mentioned in this thread and many others, there is no problem with having banner ads on your site such as Google Adsense and other similar programs. The TOS states you cannot run a banner ad server program where you are supplying banner ads to other sites.
