I never planned on selling hosting but when people ask if I can do it, I tell them yes. I just wish I was given the resources to keep up with the market so my business can satisfy more customers. I already know it's not profitable to become a "hosting company" using a reseller account from another company.

Well said. I was just thinking that could be a better alternative for reselling. HG should have some kind of transparent affiliate program. When they let us resell there packages, add on a couple of bucks, and call them our own. That would be nice.

I think the reseller hosting is a great place to get set up and gather clients. But to make money, aside from value added services, go to a dedicated server, from another provider that you can "over sell" from. The cost for such a server will run around $450.00 per month. Although the support might not be as good as HG, that is one risk you may face.

I think you missed the point QuietFinn, the dedicated servers are limited to disk space and bandwidth. Granted you can buy more for a premium fee. But with 1500 GB of bandwidth, try to sell 20+ packages with 10 GB disk space and 500 - 1000 GB bandwidth. I am in no way saying that HG is not a great provider, at times I would be lost without their support. I am just saying that you will not be able to compete with other hosting providers, including HG.
Also, did I miss something? In one of your old posts, you said that "no, you can not oversell". http://forums.hostgator.com/showthre...1569#post41569 Did this policy change? Last edited by enet; 12-23-2006 at 02:21 PM. |

Yes, you can oversell on the dedicated. The post you link to says you can't on the reseller.

Ok, but the point still is that with only 1500 GB of bandwidth you will end up in a bind at some point, especially if you try to compete with the new packages that HG has set up for shared customers.

??? Did you not tell people 4 posts earlier to go with a dedicated server they can oversell from? For $450/month? And then we tell you that you CAN oversell on the HG dedis, and they're cheaper than $450/month, and suddenly you say this is a bad idea?? Is your point to talk about reselling or to bash HG in any way possible?

Depends on how risky you want to be I guess. If you're dreamhost, i'd say you could spread it a LOT....

Well I did not want to mention any other hosts names, but I have to agree with you on that one.

I got just over 100 accounts on a basic server and CPU is the main concern. For bandwidth, I have never went over 200GB in a month for now. So plenty of spare bandwidth but high CPU load from time to time.
