Default Backups and automated emails

Do you perform nightly backups or is that my responsibility? If you don't then is there a way for me to easily automate the process?

Also, is there a way to receive an automated email with data from my website activity? I'd like to receive a daily email with this information. Thanks,

Shane

Backups are our own responsibility, although I do believe HG does backups once a week.

This is from the TOS.

5.) Backups and Data Loss
Your use of the service is at your sole risk. HostGator is not responsible for files and/or data residing on your account. You agree to take full responsibility for files and data transferred and to maintain all appropriate backup of files and data stored on HostGator servers.

Gwyneth has a list with some great backup resources. Hopefully she will chime in here with a link.

Striddy is correct, both that HG performs backups and that having your own backups are also your responsibility. This is true for any host, however. NEVER a good idea to rely on the host for backups. The level of automation available to you from HG software depends somewhat on what type of hosting plan you get, and people also sometimes use other scripts to help with this. Backups are a fairly big topic here, so once you get full forum access, you may want to do some searches for them to get more options.

On your second question about getting emailed with your site activity, I assume you are referring to traffic? I'm not aware of a utility that will email you traffic info, although that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Perhaps someone else knows something about it.

There are a couple of ways you can get daily email with website activity data. Both require some setup on your part.

If you know how to make use of raw log files in .gz format, you can use the raw log manager in cPanel to archive a log in your home directory at the end of each day's stats run, and then set up a chron job to email the file to you.

The other way is to use Google Analytics (GA). This is a great free service that provides a lot of information about website traffic in an easy to use format. In order to make use of it, you will need to add some lines of code to each webpage you want to track. Once you've done that, you can explore the various reports that GA can generate and decide which ones you'd like emailed to you daily. To schedule automated emailing of a report, go to the report, click on Email, click on Set Up Email, click on Schedule, and provide the necessary info.

If you do daily backups make sure you delete the old ones or you will loose precious space.http://punctdigital.ro/stat1.jpg
