So using the DiskSync backup provided by thePlanet is quickly becoming cost ineffective. 80GB for $160 isn't going to work for me when I can get my own small server for that price.
I know it has been suggested that some of us 'go in' on getting a server for backups before and some issues have been raised. Sadly the only one I remember was security concerns. I will be getting this server for backups dispite the responce I get here. However I am looking at turning it into a busniess venture and reselling some of the unused space. So before I actually place the order for the account, I am looking to see if there is any need/desire for this. If there is then I will need to change the hardware and software configuration to better serve. This obviously targets dedicated customers, however I have almost completed a script which will allow resellers to make their own backups and store them here. Most likly price ranges (yes I know the edge values overlap, final price scheme will ), 5-10gb @ $1.2/GB 15-25gb @ $1.00/GB 30-80gb @ $0.75/GB 85gb+ @ $0.60/gb There will be bandwidth limitations on the accounts, however they will likly be 1.5 - 2x the storage space and as these types of accounts are ment for more long term storage. I prevent abuse, I suggest you block access via IP addresses and only allow connections from customer's IP addresses.

I agree that $160 is enough to buy a whole server and if you put a spare drive in your other server, you can basically have two servers backing each other up. |

Short time ago I sow this:
http://www.bqinternet.com/backup/ Did some standard presales tests, all ok. The backup account can be accessed using Rsync/SSH, FTP, SFTP, SCP, and Samba mounts. You can use any file transfer program that supports FTP or SCP. Nix "nice" command recommanded for the first BU. The backup servers are connected at 1Gbps each. Finally decided to store on a jukebox. Not having rsync acces, wrote a simple script doing the same. Perhaps I can launch rsync with a php exec but not tryed. |

Softlayer has a NAS, not sure on prices at the moment.
They get good reviews on WHT. Also, you can remotely access the NAS direct over vpn or direct ftp and it doesn't count against your bandwidth. I've got a server there, but not using the NAS yet. Been happy with everything so far. They do include a 1Gb 'lockbox' of network storage for free when you have a server with them. bh |

Unfortunaly our boxes would need to be hosted with softlayer in order for us to use their NAS.

Being a newbie to dedicated servers, I simply signed up for an account at servage hosting. For a dirt cheap price I get over 300GB webspace which also can be used as file storage.
I will now use the server WHM backup function to do a backup via FTP on a regular basis to my Servage hosting account. |

$6 for 310GB of space? I may use them too, try to fill up the account and see if they suspend you.
