  1. I created myself an FTP server at home and download a weekly backup
  2. Using a second VPS without cPanel to store a daily backup
I've used bqbackup in the past and never had any issues with them.

What about getting a hosting plan on a shared hostgator server ($4.95/mo) and configuring WHM server to do the auto backup via ftp?

Any reason why that wouldn't work?

HI Alex,

It's against our TOS to do this.

I'm trying r1soft agent but it seems that it is not able to work on VPS(node) at this time.

- not able to load kernel
- not able to load custom-kernel required for the agent
- not able to start agent

Waiting for a confirmation from r1soft is v3.0 can run on a node.

That is correct. R1Soft requires a custom kernel module to be loaded on the VPS. You are unable to load kernel modules on our VPS solution since it uses the host kernel.

If we offered an FTP/SSH/Rsync style of backup service would you guys use it? I can probably get something in the works if we have enough demand for it.

We backup all of our servers for disaster recovery. A lot of our clients backup their data though, and I think its smart that they do.

For actual user backups we don't really offer anything at the moment. Each user can generate backups in their cPanel account, using Virtuozzo, or doing just a file system copy etc..

In order for them to have remote backups they need to get a 3rd party service with another company, or store their backups on their home PC's.

I was thinking of whipping up something similar to the backup solutions out there... servers with large amounts of storage RAID, 1 GiGE~ connection, user quotas etc..

If we did do this backup solution, we would probably put the backup servers in Houston, TX. The VPS servers are in Dallas, TX, so this would give extra redundancy in case something ever were to happen in Dallas, at the Data center there.

Hi,

I would, without any questions sign up for this kind of services. I prefer having everything under 1 company than having to use a 3rd party service. It would more easier in case of a disaster. Just open a ticket with support and they can find the backup server and restore data as they have access to both machines.

I want to be a beta tester 10 minutes ago for an ftp/rsync/ssh system at HG. I would even help creating an WHM addon or why not an icon in Virtuozzo for restore or a seperate control panel. Many options..

I got a good questions: How much disk space do we have to create our VPS backup?

I have attached my backup solution for my VPS @ HG and many other dedicated server that I do backup for people and business that I know around town.

- 2 Dell 700 with 4 x 500GB RAID10 and 2 X 80 RAID1
- 1 IBM 346 Dual Xeon 3.0 with 4 hot swap HD RAID5
- 2 IBM 345 Dual Xeon 2.8 with 4 hot swap HD RAID5
- 1 HotBrick 401 Firewall/VPN
- 1 Cisco Catalyst unmanaged switch
- $$$ for high speed connection...

I prefer having my own gear or doing business with only one company.

Unhappy Re: Backup Recommendations

Hello,
I have a related question to the back-up issue.
Can someone point me towards the right direction regarding the following:
it is one issue to create regular back-ups and it is an other one to make sure that I am backing up files that are not contaminated. What is the way to check whether my files are intact? Is there an automated process?

rsync by default does an md5sum comparison of each file, so that should indicate that the file is intact. You could write something to go through your files, and build a checksum list, then make it run against the files on your backup server.

Rsync is a pretty trustworthy application though You might just want to look into rsync.

A backup system might be around the corner at HostGator. We are trying to build an affordable solution with redundancy.

GatorDavec,
Thanks for your response. Regarding the back-up system you are mentioning. That would be absolutely &! DO you have an idea how long it would take to put that in place?

Cheers,
Tom

Something new about this, when we expect to start.

I'm still waiting on our first setup to be shipped. The RAID card I initially wanted to go with apparently won't play nice with the backplane, so we went with a higher end LSI card.

The first setup will be for in-house backups, when we are sure that is stable, we will start getting a user solution up and running.

I too would be very interested in a HG backup solution, especially one that allowed us to go back in time for restores.
