Default back up restore makes no sense

Hello:

I think the implementation of backup restore at hostgator makes no sense at all. Why do i have to upload the files I want to restore if there is a restore copy on my home directory. This is totally nuts. Can someone please clarify.

Thank you

Cristian

Speaking only for myself when I make backups of my site I download the backup to my local computer here at home. I might keep one backup on my hostgator site in a backup subdirectory which you certainly use to retrieve individual files from. My thoughts are if there were to be a major catastrophe such as a complete hard disk failure on my hostgator server (all hard drives fail eventually) I still have a good backup here at home. Actually I keep a copy of the backups on an external hard drive, the computer and on a flash drive.

So exactly how do you see your backup procedure working?

Thanks

Steve

Yes that procedure is fine if you have small websites or a very fast upload connection. Just the contrary on my case where I have a site with thousands of images ( 500Mb) and a dsl connection of 32 kb/s....so you can see how painful it can be to upload all those images again if something goes wrong. On the other side I cannot have the backup stored on the server as it eats up all my inodes allowance.

On the other hand if you have your back up on the server you have to restore manually, it would be great if it was a procedure to bakup (home directory +sqls) and just with one click on the backup restore to the previous state.
Anyway all this restrictions (inode...etc) are contradicting with the "unlimited" capacity hostgator advertizes.
I know that the dedicated server is an option but from 15$/month to 174$ the jump is huge. Wish there was something in between

Are you sure about that? The backup is one file so therefore one inode.

Agreed it would be great, but it's just not that simple. I bet you can't "one click" restore your computer.

What's the world coming to? You just don't get much for your $10 these days do you. (sarcastic)

The one time I needed to resort to my backup I was only looking for a few files after I made some changes to a Joomla site that I shouldn't have ;-) The ability to just manually select the files I wanted to replace from my one large backup file was great. I didn't need to restore the entire website.

I keep copies of all my website development work on my home PC as well as my local Linux server, an external HD and burn copies to CD.

Is it possible to upgrade your DSL connection to a higher level resulting in a faster download speed?
