Default How to avoid adding unneeded domains?

Hi,

My understanding is that when we add add-on domain we also create a subdomain "addonDomain.primaryDomain.tld". Is there any way to avoid this? By reading DNS records for any add-on domain anyone can identify primary domain for this add-on and then identify all other add-on domains for this primary domain. I consider it breach of privacy. Does anybody have any thoughts on how to avoid this?

Thanks.

Yes.
Don't use add-on domains.

It sounds like a good idea, but in this case you're limited by your primary domain + subdomains - right?

The other option is to use separate accounts for each domain. The addon domain feature is convenient and an inexpensive way to host multiple domains but you also have to live with the drawbacks.

I understand and agree. The only thing I'm still not sure - is it cpanel limitation or HG limitation? My last hosting company didn't have cpanel (and didn't have this drawback :-). Looks like it's generic cpanel problem?

It's basically due to the way cPanel is set up to allow addon domains.

You can get a reseller account and avoid this problem.

I just signed up for a package yesterday and the lack of htaccess help on here is just astounding to me.

Why does everyone keep saying this, wherever I look on this forum.

When simply you could just park the domain and then use htaccess to redirect that parked domain to a folder in your web root.

That will simply remove the problem of a sub domain being created and then you won't need to get multi accounts for the "added sub domain problem".

Unless I'm missing something here?

You're making an unfounded judgement. The .htaccess advise has been given multiple times on this forum, however, isn't applicable here. This person is concerned about security. Most shared servers (including Hostgator's) allow DNS zone transfers, so by reading DNS records of a primary domain anybody can see all the subdomains setup for that domain. This means all the addon domains become exposed, .htaccess or not.

The way to avoid this is to create accounts in a way where a subdomain is not created on another domain--namely, separate accounts using a reseller account or separate Hostgator accounts.

I just realized I don't have access to the non public area of the forums and I'm guessing htaccess info would be in there, I appolize for that unfounded judgement. I emailed Wes to have that fixed.

Yea I don't know what I was thinking, 1 dns per account. I thought in the original post that he was merely was asking how to avoid the sub domain creation, thats why I stated about parked domains.
