I have recently signed up for a reseller account and am interested in installing Autopilot. The sign up form for Autopilot says that I can install the script myself or for $25 HostGator can do it. I would like to do the installation myself, but I don't seem to have a shell account. FTP accesses my root directory, so I can upload the files OK, but I need shell access to do things like chmod on the files and directories.
Thank you, Larry |

Larry,
You won't need root access to install autopilot. They will offer version2 or you can specially request V3. You also may want to ask as I read that HG is now offering shell access with all shared and reseller accounts?

You can change the permissions of files with most FTP clients.

You can also change them in cPanel, very few FTP clients Don't support CHMOD settings. You don't need shell access to install WHMAP.

I read the installation instructions at the Autopilot site and it said that the file permissions need to be changed to 777. If this is not the case then you are probably right.
If HG is offering shell accounts, I can't figure out how to access it. I have been using command line ftp in Windows XP which does not have the chmod capability. I guess I need to install a new client. Thanks for your input, Larry |

YukonMaster, thanks for the cPanel tip. I haven't had time yet to go through everything there.

Anywhere that says use 777, you'll likely need to use 755 instead (because of phpsuexec, which is something that's installed on most HostGator servers).
Support can give you shell access but you may get charged for it.

I believe they would give you jailed shell for free, as long as your provide them with a government issued photo identification card scanned and emailed or possibly mailed/faxed.
If you would like some installation help, send me a PM and I would be more than happy to help you out.

When you make the request for WHM AP, we do provide documentation on how to install the program. Be sure to use chmod 755 rather than 777 for your files.
To request jailed shell access, send an email to support@hostgator.com with an attached copy of a government issued photo id, such as a passport or driver's license. |

I finally got it installed OK. I found out about using chmod 755 instead of 777 the hard way. If you use 777 the scripts fail!
Also there is a problem with the script that sets up the site paths in the config table of the database. I installed the scripts to public_html/ap instead of public_html. Some of the paths were set correctly but 5 of them were not. This caused the last script to fail until I went into the database and corrected the entries. Thanks again for everyones help. Larry |

I think this sucks, I feel so mislead. I've spent countless days trying to upload auto pilot going step by step along with the installation video tutorial sent to me in a email from hostgator and if you watch the video it clearly show chmod 777 rather than 755. are you being sarcastic or is the video misleading. I still have yet to install autopilot, Its been very difficult for me. everytime I try to tranfer mib_data it fails etc. (using core ftp)then some files will transfer but others dont. I'm so stuck with this and I dont want to spend another $25.00 for hostgator to do it for me because I accidentally erased my public_html folder and was charged $15.00 for restoration. all I want is a website up ( from using a hosting template- preferably a flash) so that I can sale hosting accounts from my site. I tried uploading a hosting template to my public_html folder as well but cant locate the page or dont know if I was suppose to have uploaded it to public_html folder or not. I just want to see something in my main domain spot..up and running. I purchased a resellers package recently and dont know what my first step is. I dont know if I have to register with another host or is hostgator all I need(??)do I have to change my dns or is my domain propagated already or what. my domain is www.elamshosting.com my IP address is 74.53.172.82 and my nameservers is ns673.websitewelcome.com ns674.websitewelcome.com I'm told that once I get auto pilot installed, it offers its own templates and I can build from there, but its been hell trying to install. I have sitebuider but it offers no hosting templates and I have sitestudio, but for some reason It wont let me login using my username and password from my domain or my main account.if theres a way I can get around having to use autopilot would be beautiful but if I'm going to need it in order to run my online business then...(??)if someone can please help me or guide me in the right direction. I feel that getting a good solid hosting website up would be the first step in moving my reseller accounts. please help!!!!!! you can respond here, and or email me at elamsnetwork@gmail.com Thanks! |

I am also having problems installing -- it goes through the install process cleanly until the very end, then gives the following error message:

bishop80 and tim1701, if you have full forum access, have you looked through the category specifically about WHMAP to see if others have had similiar issues?

My suggestion is learn more about this stuff before contemplating taking peoples hard earned money and then not being able to adequately provide them with service. Running a business is far more than putting up a "site builder" website or template and installing some software. What has your business adviser or accountant said about this venture? Fully behind it are they?

I don't have an accountant or business partner, but I have a few friends and family that have ageed to help me pilot my business through my learning curve. For us Hatchlings, take it easy on us please. I know some of the q's are absurd but there is know need to disparage our ambition. Pointing us somewhere else on the boards, with your experience, would be more helpful. Thanks. |

Alternatively, people may find WHMCS, which also has a forum category, easier to cope with.

Just out of curiosity, how have you been misled?

I would venture to say that if you are having problems uploading the application, then you need to make sure you are uploading in binary format. This application requires the binary format while uploading. Sounds like it may correct most, if not all, of your uploading issues. It does look like you have gotten a template working on your site so congratulations on that. I hope that you get everything you need working. If you have any other problems, feel free to ask. |
