I recently emailed a friend of mine who is on earthlink and uses their email system.
I immediately received an auto-reply from his email server saying that I was not on his current list of accepted email addresses and had a link to a form for my name and the reason I was emailing him. The page pointed out that if the recipient decided to allow me that my message would automatically be delivered as was originally intended. I think that is a frikkin fantastic feature. I know it wouldn't be for everyone, but with the amount of spam I got today I know I would use it. |

There is an option like this called BoxTrapper.

I though that is what that feature was, but it doesn't work. At least not with a catch all account.
Maybe I'm wrong but I haven't had a single test email get bounced by it yet... Does it have an FAQ or something? |

Yes, the catchall I had to specifically request on my account.
After tweaking with the setting on the box trapper it appears to be working for now. We'll see how it goes

I just thought I'd give an update.
The boxtrapper works awesome, much better than I expected. No spam has gotten through, I just check the boxtrapper log once a day to make sure no real stuff that it automated got stopped by it. Though hostgator's billing got through without being on my whitelist.... ![]() I use my catchall account so that for school I use school@domain.com, promotional offers I use junk@domain.com, work I use work@domain.com, and they all come to me in my main account. I use filters in outlook to sort them into their respective folders automatically. The problem was that I was getting spam sent to kljasdfh@domain.com different every day so I couldn't filter them out. Boxtrapper did the trick so I'm going to stick with the catchall still (: Last edited by scavok; 06-28-2007 at 07:58 AM. Reason: spelling |

Nah, its all the same to me. If I'm going to set up a forward, I might as well an email. The less to maintain the better
![]() Why is everyone so against a catchall account? I like it. |

Box trapper is for people older than 60 who have no cool friends. Anyone with cool friends will NOT have cool friends any more when they start getting box trapper messages...

Does SPF sacrifice anything? Does it help with spam at all, or is it really just for help with spoofing?

I find it a viable solution to use... I mean, they only have to do it ONCE.

Catchalls are invaluable for figuring out who sells your email address to others and lets you block specific people or groups from contacting you. I give out amazon@mydomain, bankofamerica@mydomain, ect...
If BoxTrapper worked with a catch all, or at least let me specify a wild card in the account field so it worked with every account in my domain (which is one that is the catch all), it would be hugely helpful. I've had the catch all in place for years now - before they disabled it and required a request to activate it. I use Spam Assassin and could use just a mail client to filter, but I prefer webmail which may change once I get a Nokia N810 (waiting for the N910 rumors!) |

So basicly i could create a lot of email accounts and all would be redirected to the main one if i use "CatchAll"?
And i can request this via T

catch all is a BAD IDEA, if you don't want to spend your day deleting SPAM, cause you don't reject any mails and are available as *.urdomain.tld
suggestion Create a email Account and you can use alias forwarding for other aliases you would need to use. All mails can be reached one mailbox without having problems from catch all. |

No, the catch all address will automatically receive all messages that are not specifically sent to an address you have created either as an account or forwarder. IMO it is best not to have a catchall address these days since so many spammers send to random addresses and it causes a lot more load on the server (as well as filling your catchall box.)
A better option is to create an address such as junk@yourdomain and then set up forwarders that send mail to that account. For example, if I need to sign up with NewDiscountWeb I might set up a forwarder that sends NewDiscount@ to the junk account and I can see if they are giving out the address I gave them. I can then delete that forwarder and the messages will be rejected in the future. |

I use my gmail address for this. With gmail, you can add +anything to your address-- so for instance, matt+amazon@gmail.com, matt+bankofamerica@gmail.com, etc. and they all show up in your gmail account. Then you can filter off them.

I also use a Gmail account now as well. It is easier to just make the disposable addresses on the fly and then add a filter to delete the messages when I don't want to see them any longer.
