Default Another N00b/will my site work question

Hello, I am looking to move a site here that has ASP with Frontpage. (Pardon if that sounds wrong; that's about all I know!!!) I see that HG is all linux- the site is currently on M$. How can I tell if the site will work unaltered over on HG? The only thing remotely tricky is a password-protected area of the site (single password for everyone).

And what is the transfer process?? I couldn't find that spelled out anywhere.....

Thanks!

If it's got ASP tags and is using ASP functions it likely won't work. You can ask to be on a chilisoft ASP server, which attempts to emulate ASP.NET but it may not be perfect.

Hostgator has a 45 day moneyback guarantee. Sign up for a plan and try it out; the worst case scenario is that it doesn't work and you get your money back.

Here's the transfer form:

Cool, thanks.

If I sign up, is there a way to have the site migrated for testing *prior* to updating DNS? From the form, it seems to indicate that I would need a primay domain at HG....and I guess I won't have a primary domain here until I do the cutover post-migration...

thanks again!

There is a way to do that, but if you are using asp, stick to windows hosting. Chilisoft is NOT real ASP and has a lot of problems.

It simply isn't worth moving to a Linux based system if you need ASP.

Hostgator is working on getting shared windows hosting (from what they have said) so I would stay where you are and move (if you still want to move) after that.

I completely agree with this sentiment.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I have 30 days to find a new home- my rehoster is closing up shop, and I'm getting bounced off of godaddy. {Now why godaddy won't let me sign up and move the site over to my control is beyond me- they want me to sign up for a new account, and figure out how to move the site myself}. I don't have the bandwidth (i.e. time) myself to figure out how to do that- I'm looking for the path of least resistance for the time being. We also have some ideas for web apps, so I'd prefer to be self-managed from this point forward. FWIW, we're a nonprofit volunteer fire company- www.barrenhill.com.

Thanks again for the answers....now I guess I'll have to search for a provider that offers M$ and the free site transfer just like HG....

Hi,
if iam not mistaken, there's no way in few windows based panels to create a full backup which can be restored elsewhere.
If your existing provider is closing, i would recommend you to download the backup of your site as soon as possible, don't wait for the closing date.

Also if your existing content on your website is all *.html *.htm or *.php pages those should work fine on hostgator linux plans too, but if you have ASP pages you need to first backup all files via FTP, grab DB and mails, and then try your hunt for a new provider.

If you can manage on linux hosting, iam sure hostgator has enough peer forum supporters apart from their 24x7 Staff, who can always help you with your questions and help you.

you need to check your existing account what type if files you use there.

Secondly if your domain is under your old provider's control, godaddy may have requested you to sign up as a customer at their site(usually free, i may be wrong, but 2-3 yrs back it was free until you ordered something)
once you sign up they might ask you to request your provider to push your domain from their panel to yours.

just visited your site and its asp pages, so you would need the windows hosting somewhere.

Update: i see your domain is under networksolutions.com so i don't understand why you asked godaddy about this.
you can keep your domain at networksolutions.com and have it renewed when it falls due, or if you want you can fetch the domain transfer key from networksolutions.com and then move to any other domain registry.

You can always keep your domain at networksolutions.com and host it with any webhost in the world, all you would need to do is change nameservers from your networksolutions.com control panel to move a hosting account from one place to another.

Hi GHPK, I really, really appreciate you investigating this for me.

The domain registration isn't under godaddy rule- I have the user & pwd for that.

It's just the hosting that is. We first signed up for hosting in 1999-when it wasn't a very common thing. My rehoster (who used to have a server farm in his downtown rohome!) in the interim got rid of all his hardware and became a rehoster with godaddy. Now, he's decided to leave the business altogether.

Since he was with godaddy, I figured the easiest would be to just sign up with them and have them "move" the site from his <expiring> account to mine. And I would change the DNS pointers if necessary. But godaddy can't facilitate this. I have downloaded all the files under the site root directory, just in case....

So I guess I now need to figure out how to move this site and keep it running?? It's ASP...and I think frontpage (the guy who built is was a fire company member but since has moved), so I'm not sure of the M$ details (I'm a unix guy myself). Do I need to download with frontpage and then re-upload to the new site?? Can this be done with dreamweaver, or do I need frontpage only??

Thank again.....I wish HG had M$ up....seems like it would make it simpler!!!

You can download the whole thing with any FTP client, then reupload it to your new host. You shouldn't need to use Frontpage to download it.

I'd go to webhostingtalk.com if I were you and do a few searches for good Windows shared hosts. There will probably be some good advice there.

you are very welcome for any assistance.
hostgator does have plans for shared windows hosting, but it may take sometime before they start offering it.

as you've downloaded using FTP, check that all your pages are at your home computer, then you can look at WHT as slapshotw suggested, Iam sure you can find many hosts who can help you.

If you want you can also search sites like this one
you may also look for reviews of any webhost before you take a plan with them.

If anybody could have converted your site to linux compatible, you could have saved money and would have accessed all the goodies we get here, free authentic templates, peer support, ticket support, etc etc, I am nearing 4 happy yr's here.

Any new from HostGator on when Windows Shared plans might start? Several months ago, the word was "possibly in several months". I have seen news about adding staff, and even more obscure news about a Windows Shared Beta program. I have 2 accounts I need to setup with Windows and DotNetNuke sites. Any new would be approciated.

More surprising that they are willing to even bother supporting Windows in the first place, but business is business.

I use Macs at home (with Windows virtualization when required), and Linux here. Everything pretty much just works. Why aggravate yourself?
