I'm new at this, so please forgive me for being naive. I'm wondering if I host my website at HG, but have my domain hosted elsewhere, do I still get all the goodies with my HG account, such as the popemail, associated with that domain hosted somewhere else?
I've been looking at domain registrars, and they offer features such as the popemail when you have a domain set up with them or transfered to them, but I'd rather just use what HG offers if I can. Thanks! |

Email, including pop access to it, is something that your host gives to you. It has nothing to do with your domain registrar.

I'm afraid that popemail is restricted to Catholics, no matter where your domain is hosted...

you will find the features like popmail and unlimited aliases and forwarders much more generous and scaleable. with HG hosting plans, you have many more features and options. these are the features you want to use.... if your registrar shoping, referrals and reputations are what you want to consider. there are several posts here where folks have told there preferences for domain registrars, good experiences and horror stories. its not the "little" freebees they offer, your going to be using the "big league" features of your hosting account

There doesn't appear to be a .god domain extension, though. Vatican City's is '.va' (not .vc, as I'd assumed--that's St. Vincent and the Grenadines.) To quote the auto-generated language from a domain registrar who will remain nameless: "At this moment, it is not possible to register .va domain names. As soon as these names are available, we will let you know via our website." |

Ya'all are just too funny! Serra, I like you already!!! Maybe I shoulda typed pop-email, but popemail was faster, ya know? Now we've got a new term, don't we?
Anyway, I think I've found a domain registrar I can trust. They don't offer anything for free. So, what should I purchase? Do I need to buy URL forwarding? It doesn't sound like I need to worry about buying email from them. In case you're wondering, I'm seriously considering going with moniker.com. If anyone knows of any reason why I shouldn't, please speak now or forever hold your peace! I'm hoping I'll never have to change registrars again, but of course I realize the foolishness of that comment so let's just say I'd like to be happy with whoever I choose for a very long time. Also, if someone could point me to the page or forum where the registrars are discussed, I would sure appreciate it! I think you are all the greatest! Kim |

Kim, there are a lot of threads about registrars, so probably searching would give you the best chance (be sure to use the search link in the upmost blue bar).
I got to wondering about popemail, though, and you just can't make these things up. From Newsmax: "The Vatican Web site [helpfully called www.vatican.va] was created under the Pontificate of John Paul II and supervised by an American Vatican official, Archbishop John P. Foley. Foley, the president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, obtained the .va domain to "let people be assured that whatever messages came from that .va address were authentic,” he explained in a speech in Rome on September 23." Unfortunately, Father Guido Sarducci doesn't appear to be blogging in: L'OSSERVATORE ROMANO Weekly Edition in English |

Matt: So I can point my domain to my website without URL forwarding? Great! Then all I need to do is register the domain and pay for only that. Correct? It's a good thing this forum is here, otherwise a newbie like me could really spend alot of money that I didn't need to spend!
Gwyneth: Thanks! I see that search link and I'm on my way there now. Oh, and I didn't know there was a popemail, but of course it makes sense that someone would think of that! Guess you can tell I'm not catholic! -Kim |

Gwyneth: I just tried searching for moniker. Nothing comes up. Nothing at all. I tried moniker.com and only my posts come up. I can't believe I'm the only one here who has asked about them. I know there must be other posts. Am I doing something wrong? I've had this happen on another forum too. I DO know how to use a search! Good grief....that's how I found this place! Please enlighten me to the secret here if one exists! Thanks! -Kim

I'm not either but I would be surprised if the Holy See's site has an "ask the Pope" feature or something like Microsoft's ridiculous "email Bill". I did find out, however, that one of the Vatican's firewalls--honestly, I couldn't make this up--is named Michael, after the archangel.
On the other hand, since I just learned that there are several ways to send email to the Archbishop of Canterbury, although probably not through the devoted site, www.archbishopofcanterbury.org, there may well be "popemail". |

You may be. Remember that one of the search links does the whole forum and one does the subforum. On the other hand, try searching 'registrar'.

Yes. You'll then go into their control panel, and find where to edit Nameservers or DNS settings. Fill the nameservers in with the ones HG sends you in your welcome email, wait up to 48 hours (it's usually more like 2-3), and you'll be good to go. Don't be surprised if your domain is in and out of working the few hours after putting in the correct DNS info.

The HG forum is now truly blessed.
Isn't it funny how millions of people will never be able to interpret some things (for instance, the Vatican's newspaper) in any other way than a 30-year old TV bit? Of course, I think that's a good thing. |
