This is all new to me. Using my one domain I want to build 20 or more niche blogs and have them linking to another separate site.

I will keep it general:
register the domains you want -> setup addon domains pointing to the respective domains that you registered in step one -> then install a blog in each domain

Also, if they is no strong competition beetwen the blogs, worth to study the idea to have one common home page with a short presentation of each blog.
The people coming for one blog see's also Ah! there is an interesting one, vamos to see them. In other words The effect "the best meat sales are in the boucher street". Nothing against direct links for the blog3 addicts. Nothing against Hostalot proposition meeting separate blogs, this is in opposition a commuity set of blogs. Nothin nether against a mix. Good luck |

Thanks guys, I get your drift. Having looked at other posts, what would be wrong with creating subdomains or sub directories for by other blogs.

Nothing wrong with that.
Only use add-on domains if you want them to have independence of each other, but there is no real difference technically. Basically the question is - do you want them to be sub-blogs of your main blog site, or seen as totally separate. eg. hosting.blog.com sql.blog.com forums.blog.com or myhostingblog.com blogofsql.com forumsblogging.com |

We are confusing you.
For sure no subdomains but addon domains if separated blogs. Do not worry too much, you can jump from one style to another in a few seconds. The addon domains being in the file system just a folder. Just remember that each addon domain (For the "separated style") needs a unique registered domain name BEFORE creating it. Again, enjoy |
