I'm thinking of getting a second hostgator account for tgp galleries which I know will burn alot of bandwidth. The thing is I want to make sure that I can depend on the HG claim of 3000 Gb per month before I buy another account for this purpose. Will it be too much if say I burn 100 Gb per day? I do not want to cause trouble to others on the shared server and I also do not want to get shut down.
Thanks |

If it is a shared account the bandwidth is really not going to be the issue, the main issue is whether or not the TGP will be hotlinked too and exactly how much traffic you are getting. Also paramount to this is whether this is all static content or if it's all dynamically driven via PHP/MySQL. If it's the latter and you're expecting a large amount of traffic the TGP might not be suitable for a shared account, though we do have many that run without issues; this is really something we can't guarantee off the bat and you'd just have to give it a go and we'll let you know if we see problems.

In my experience TGP's generate a high amount of connections when hot linking is allowed. Enabling hot link protection inside of cpanel will help to reduce the number of apache connections and reduce the amount of CPU required to run the site. Just like Ford was saying, bandwidth is not really the issue. The problem you will run into on a shared server is the amount of CPU required to run your site. Static pages will use far less CPU than dynamic database driven sites, although you would be able to reduce some of that CPU usage by using a caching feature on the site. Some sites are able to maintain a lot of traffic where as others have trouble due to the amount of CPU required. We would really need to see the site in action before we can determine if it will cause a problem or not.

The general answer is that with unlimited bandwidth, bandwidth isn't usually an issue because people bump up against other limitations, such as server resources and processes. See this thread: Question about Swamp Package - HostGator Peer Support Forums PS: the two gators posted while I was looking for that specific thread, which discusses several aspects of that very type of site. It took entering four or five types of vegetables to find it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I won't be using any php so that won't be a problem. Hotlinking is another story. I know how to use the hotlinking protection feature to stop hotlinking of images but I have heard that it doesnt work with WMV movies. So I dont know what I will do about that.

You should ask support whether hotlinking protection works with that kind of file--I've never heard about any such limitation, but support can advise you better than anything you've "heard". BTW, I think the php was just an example, and it wasn't so much whether you will be using it but what settings you choose for the app, which was probably written in php.

Did you add the extension to the hotlink page's list of protected extensions? By default it only works for images, but if you specify more extensions it *might* work. I haven't actually tested this myself and do not have an account to test on at the moment.

So, I believe, you should be able to add any extension to the hotlink protection. Hope this helps a little... Oops, didn't see Keith already answered this, sorry...

The cpanel tool just adds a RewriteCond / RewriteRule to your .htaccess file, so you can also edit the file directly if you prefer.
