Hi, I hope that somebody with experience in Addon domain will answer my query, much better if Gator staff will attend this one.
I am a happy and satisfied hostgator costumer with my Baby Hosting Package. As of the posting of this query, my site is using 171.46 Mb of disk and my available disk space is 614228.54 Mb. My mySQL didkspace is 12.42 Mb and I am in 1007.7 Mb of this month's bandwidth. Now, I am going to register a new domain and I am considering two options for the webhosting: (1) Should I use the same hosting package I am using now (usage as specified above), and use the Addon domain feature of my hosting package or (2) should I buy a new hosting package for this new domain. If I use option (1), will it not harm my package for I will run multiple database in a shared hosting and is it not difficult to transfer my files to a separate hosting package if ever my second domain will be hit by thousand users while remaining my present files unaffected? If I use option (2) Am I not wasting money considering my usage. I am actually more inclined for option (1) but I am much bothered with the future of my account. Any advice please... Thankyou. |

As this is a peer support forum, you would be better to send an email to sales at hostgator dot com if you prefer HG staff to answer your questions.

I'd use option 1. I don't think you'll have useage concerns running from the same account. Technically you could hit those same issues with a seperate account if you were on a busy server. Plus it'll be easier to run both from the same account. As far as it being harder to transfer files if the site ever requires a bigger package of it's own it wouldn't be hard. An addon domain will act as a seperate domain and you won't even be able to tell it's hosted under your current one. Also anything for the domain is in it's own directory seperate from your current one. I currently am running 3 addon domains in addition to my main one. Hope that helps somewhat.

I say use an add-on.

If you believe that the second domain will grow pretty rapidly then I would go with a separate account. If it is just a hobby site or a test account then the addon works fine. As I mentioned in your other thread, there is an advantage of having a separate account if it is on a different server. If one server crashes you would still have one server running and could create an addon for the domain that is down and switch DNS so that it will be back up quicker. While it is not especially hard to move files from an Addon to a stand alone account, there can be problems and you would likely have to do more editing of files such as changing the name of the database, etc.

2 domains on a single account are not much if the sites are not demanding big resources. If they will grow you can easily move them after with ease, hostgator will even move it for free for you if you get another account. http://punctdigital.ro/stat1.jpg
