Sooooo sorry that this is a basic question, but I'm new to websites and need to figure stuff out.
I sure haven't figured out cPanel yet!I signed up for an account and registered a domain. On my PC I have created a very basic HTML page (one photo and one line of text...I'm just learning). I want to upload it to HG and use it as my index (home) page. a) what FTP process do I follow? b) how/where do I put index.html? c) what else do I need to ask to have my basic page show? Thanks for your patience. I should be able to post in the regular forums in 48 hours...

Hello T-gator,
Using the "File Manager," in cPanel will be much easier than using an FTP program. If you login into your cPanel (yourdomain.com/cpanel or IPaddress/cpanel) 1.) Click on the File Manager icon -- Once it opens, remember, to browse into a directory, you need to click on the image of the folder next to the directory name. To edit the directory (rename, delete etc.) you need to click on the name of the folder. 2.) Browse into the public_html folder 3.) Once in the public_html, click Upload Files at the top 4.) Browse & select your index.html page & your image from your PC. 5.) Then click upload and wait for your files to be uploaded. 6.) Make sure your page is named "index.htm or index.html" or it will not show as the primary page. |

Thank you! With luck my dog's photo will be visible to the world ... and I will not feel so hopelessly "twentieth century!"

You could use FTP but that is more difficult.
You would need to get an FTP client such as FileZilla, then connect to your FTP server. You would have to configure FileZilla with your FTP details which would be harder, so stick with the cPanel file manager for now.

if you're working on learning how to do websites, you will need to get an ftp program eventually, though. using the cpanel upload is fine to get started, and is the easiest for sure. but as you progress, you'll find that overly limiting.
all really depends on what you want to do, too. if you want to maintain a personal website and be able to upload your pictures or whatever regularly, something like wordpress that allows you to upload stuff over a web form might be a good option for you.

Thanks for everyone's help.
My goal is to learn proper web design and run 3-4 sites, so yep, I'll have to learn a more sophisticated ftp system...and xhtml and css and... I took an HTML/web course in 2000. My, how things have changed! And then there are web templates to consider, as well as WordPress and its themes for blogging. Lots to learn! |

And then there's the part I always forget ~ checking the box that tells it to overwrite files that are there.

I thought I'd found an answer to my question, but I thought wrong ![]() First, I've never used any FTP at all. When I first created and uploaded some of my pages was using Web File Manager, now I feel helpless, it was very easy for me to create an HTML or an HTM file right on the spot using WFM (no need to upload at all). Does HostGator offer a Web File Manager to do just that? |

Not sure exactly what Web File Manager is. If your other host used cPanel then you will find things here work pretty much the same way. There is a File Manager in cPanel and you can create HTML pages with it.

And just to be clear, yes, the cPanel file manager works over the web.

Two very simple and basic questions.
Can I create in cPanel file manager either an HTML or an HTM file, without the need to Upload or FTP? Since I tried the HG demo and it doesn't let me do basic stuff, does cPanel let you see only your HTML code or it is just another WYSIWYG editor? I hope (crossing my fingers) I explained myself clearly and hope you understand my point. The reason I ask is because I'm trying to move my site to HG. I do very basic stuff and use a lot of HTML (CMS, CSS, not for me). I hate the WYSIWYG editors and right now I'm being forced to use one 'cause the hosting company moved to a new platform and everything is worthless, some files I cannot even edit! Thanks. |

if you're using cpanel 11, there is a good help section and tutorial videos on the functions of cpanel.

CuteFTP is a nice program. I used it for a while and now use CoreFTP from coreftp.com. It is free and is also very easy to use.

before you buy cuteftp (and i used to use it myself), you might want to check out filezilla which is open source and free

I used to use FileZilla but I often ran into problems with it. Now I use SmartFTP its free, more features, and does not have as a much bugs as filezilla.

Fingers Crossed...I saw a recommendation here from someone else a while back saying that Filezilla was great, I started using it after seeing the comment, and think it's great and has not yet given me any problems.

Other than the tutorial on cPanel, experiment then practice, practice, practice
*MANY* years ago I learned how to FTP using FrontPage without the webbots, then WS_FTP, then CuteFTP, then used Dreamweaver, then an old web host had problems so I learned how to FTP via My Computer, then tried Fillazilla and Coffee Cup FTP, experimented with control panel upload from vDeck, GeoCities, cPanel, etc. etc. not necessarily in the order previously mentioned.Any questions, do a Google search on any particulars. When making my first web page with text and pictures, it literally took me hours of trial and error. Google didn't exist when I was learning HTML.. Yahoo, Lycos, Northern Light search didn't have much to help novices like myself. Forums like this also didn't exist It does get easier, much easier with practice.
