The restores are currently on usernames beginning with "KN".
How many of you have formatted a 200GB hard drive? Just that alone takes a few hours. Try to imagine how long it takes to transfer (over a network) 200GB of data and restore it all. We cannot speed this process up, it's automated. With some accounts being larger than others, there's no way to say how long a certain letter will take or how much longer it will take. If everyone's account was only 100MB, we would be done by now but this obviously is not the case.

At the rate you are going, I simply cannot afford for you to be down for five days.
What is the process I can use to move my domains to another server? |

I think everyone needs to read post #9 again from Chad. The problem would have been less severe if the RAID drive had not been affected, since it was it complicates HG's problem. I am sure they don't like being in this situation either. Patience is the key here. I am not too happy about it but it is out of everyones control at this time.
Think about the enormous amount of data that must be recovered. Graphics and other large files take forever to copy. Having been in the tech industry since 1975 and working on computers since they were the size of your refrigerators I know what HG is going through. They are somewhere around "L" still as far as I can tell.

My account starts with the letter 'I' and still nothing is working for me either.
I honestly do not care about my websites right now, its the MAIL that is the issue. I have been contacted by ALL my clients numerous times asking when it will be back up and running. I know these things take a while but it would be nice to be updated hourly like the HG person said. My boss has very little patience so if we are not running by the end of the day, I will most likely be forced to change providers. I really have no complaints with HG except that they should be keeping thier customers updated hourly. Thats just good customer service!! |

200GB over the network? At home I have a little network set up. Everything is 100 Mb/s half duplex with a hub (not a switch). I can easily (when it's really slow.) copy between computers at a rate of 4 MB (that's megabytes, not bits) per second.
200 (GB) * 1024 (MB) * 1024 (KB) * 1024 (Bytes) = 214,748,364,800 bytes 4 (MB) * 1024 (KB) * 1024 (Bytes) = 4,194,304 bytes 214,748,364,800 bytes / 4,194,304 bytes/sec = 51,200 seconds 51,200 seconds / 60 (min) / 60 (hours) = 14.22 Hours That would be 14.22 hours for 200 GB at this slow speed. I would hope servers in the same data center would be at least 1 Gb/s. Do some services have to be restarded everytime an account is added or something? If so, would it have be faster to pull the whole server offline and physically put the drive in the backup server to copy from? HG, It may be helpful for some of us anxious cutomers if you would tell us the process that the server must go through to add each account. For those of you thinking of switching to other servers, you'd need to get an account on a new server and upload everything to it. The you'd just need to change your nameservers and such with your domain registrar. They say it takes, what, up to 48 hours to propagate? Folks, this may be faster than waiting for your account to come back. (When I register new domains and add them in WHM, I can access them within minutes.) If you have databases or any other kind of dynamic content, it's lost anyway if the backups they're restoring from are old. You may have more recent backups on your own computers. HG, maybe we can talk about this later, but I want to know how you are going to change your RAID setup, backup/restore procedure, etc. so nothing like this will ever happen again (on any server). Or, if it does happen again (because hardware does fail), how will you restore it in a reasonable amount of time? If we *don't* get a clear explanation, I doubt any of us will remain your customers. Thanks. Josh Last edited by hosh; 10-17-2006 at 12:52 PM. |

Josh, I do understand the propagation time it takes to move sites, but if we cannot get some decent customer service here, there is no reason to stay.
Most companies are very forgiving as long as they are notified and kept up to date when things go wrong. Currently they have partially restored 5 of my sites hosted here meaning all I get in a Directory listing page with a cgi-bin folder... thats it. None of the mail is working yet for any of these domains. |

This is just plain and simple crazy.
We all appreciate that hardware fails but we all also believed that HG had a resilient enough system to allow a restore within a reasonable time frame. I really don`t care if the RAID failed, the reseller account I have is important to me and my clients are equally important to me but in my "real" life I`m responsible for a site which has multiple blade servers and a 4 TB array, its so important that everything is completely replicated to a duplicate system on the fly. I appreciate that thats not financially viable but my god, 200GB is nothing, I`m sure we`ve all got bigger internal or external disks hanging off our desktops and a more resilient backup system should have been in place, I repeat an earlier mail, this server has over 1400 domains on it so thats 1400 "irrate" clients we all have to deal with. As I say, I don`t mind hardware failures but not having a resilient speedy backup procedure is unforgiveable. Craig PS some of my account user id`s begin with letters prior to "I" or "K" or wherever we are at the moment so all of this talk about partial ongoing restores is irrelevant and patronising. |

I've had pretty much all of my siites down since late Sunday night. It's just getting to be too much right now.... No sites. No e-mail. No nothing. Bad. I host maybe 30 or so domains and only a handful are up, and still, none have any e-mail yet.
I too really can't wrap my head around the fact that tyere aren't multiple, redundant backups already in place so things like this don't last more than a few hours... At least my main account that is my main e-mail address and my livelyhood starts with a Z so I'm pretty much last, awesome. Hostgator, any response to the refund or whatever for the month? An actual statement from the staff on this would be nice. Thank you. |

Speaking of which, HG's billing has been driving me crazy with their horrible modern bill system that emails me my password in plain text at the beginning of the month--but that's another story. |

I have a whm/cpanel vps with midphase-- theirs is a bit more complex than HGs-- but they are up.
One of you watchers said you were moving customer sites... how? I can't get in via anything. My O and S sites are still down I's came up about 4 hours ago. But I can't cpanel to them. |

This is getting old and it is retarded kind of...considering we may have to flatten North Korea soon and have the ability to do so but we are having a hard time getting 1400 hosting accounts back up.
I believe out of those 1400 there are lots of reseller accounts each of whom could be hosting dozens more....so there may be thousands of sites to load. Someone correct me on this if I am wrong...
