404 in Awstats for domain root??

how come my Awstats is reporting over 300 404's for my domain root? i realize that it's not exactly network outage if Awstats picks up 404s, but i figured this was a better place to ask that the hosting forum.

if you don't have the robot file in the public_html dir.. that can also generate 404 errors when search engines look for that file!

i'm up to nearly 500 now... it literally says:

wth? last month's stats didn't have that.

right. now i've got nearly a thousand 404 errors on my root alone. what is up with that?
